A range of equipment is used, to transport scientists, keep them warm, move loads, get in and out of the continent and more. In the coastal regions, the temperatures will go from above zero to -40º Celsius. Strong winds can roar up to 200 kph. Equipment for Antarctic field work will be exposed to low temperatures, freeze-thaw cycles, melting ice, grit-blasting and strong static electricity. All types of batteries have reduced performance in the cold. The metal wires in cables are unaffected by the cold, but the plastic covering can become rigid and shatter in the cold.
